Osun State has emerged as the sixth-best performing state in Nigeria in the 2025 Subnational Audit Efficacy (SAE) Index, scoring 53 percent, in what observers describe as a reflection of ongoing governance reforms under Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The ranking highlights the state’s growing reputation for transparency, accountability, and improved public financial management, following a series of institutional reforms introduced by the Adeleke administration over the past three years.
According to the report, Osun’s improved standing signals a shift toward open governance in a national landscape often criticised for limited transparency. Analysts say the development underscores deliberate efforts by the state government to strengthen audit systems and ensure responsible management of public funds.
Since assuming office, Adeleke has placed transparency at the core of his administration’s policies. Measures implemented include regular publication of state budgets, enhanced audit processes, and the deployment of technology-driven financial management systems aimed at improving efficiency and oversight.
These initiatives, stakeholders note, have reinforced institutional checks, promoted fiscal discipline, and enhanced the credibility of government financial operations.
The state government’s emphasis on due process, particularly in procurement and financial reporting, has also contributed to rebuilding public confidence.
Observers argue that this renewed trust is essential for encouraging citizen participation and strengthening democratic accountability.
Policy experts further describe Osun as an emerging model for open governance among subnational governments in Nigeria, noting that the SAE Index ranking reflects tangible outcomes of reforms rather than policy declarations.
The latest ranking, they add, demonstrates a transition from policy promises to practical implementation, with transparency now playing a central role in governance and service delivery in the state.
With the recognition, Osun joins a growing list of states seeking to improve governance standards through accountability-driven reforms, as calls intensify nationwide for more transparent and citizen-focused leadership.
