Kola Oyelere, Kano
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for declaring a state of emergency on national security, describing the move as a bold and necessary step toward safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians.
Speaking while opening the 34th Executive Council Meeting at the Government House, Kano, the governor said the declaration would strengthen collaboration between federal and state authorities in tackling banditry and other emerging security threats.
“We welcome President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national declaration of a state of emergency on security,” Governor Yusuf said. “We consider the declaration bold and necessary for the betterment of all Nigerians. Kano State pledges full cooperation with all security agencies in implementing the federal directive.”
Governor Yusuf assured residents that his administration is fully prepared to confront recent bandit incursions, particularly in border communities such as Tsanyawa, Shanono, Bagwai and surrounding villages.
He noted that criminals had attempted to exploit these areas to launch attacks but emphasized that joint operations between state security agencies were already underway to prevent any breach.
“We have sat down with security personnel and mapped out strategies on how to tackle the emerging bandit threats,” he said. “With these and other measures we have taken, I urge the good people of Kano to remain calm. Kano remains safe, and we will ensure it stays that way.”
He added that security agencies in the state had demonstrated strong commitment, with recent strategic meetings producing actionable plans to curb further incursions.
During the Executive Council meeting, Governor Yusuf received more than 15 awards from various organisations in recognition of his leadership achievements. He described the honours as motivation to intensify efforts toward the development of the state.
The governor also commended the media, particularly the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), for what he described as mature and responsible reportage. He pledged continued government support to enable journalists to perform their duties effectively.
Chairman of the chapel, Alhaji Murtala Adewale, lauded the governor for the support extended to journalists, noting that the recent retreat organised by the state government was impactful.
He said participants gained valuable insights, especially on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance their work.
