Kano Govt disburses N7.4m to families of Uromi attack victims

Kola Oyelere, Kano

The Kano State Government has disbursed N7.4 million as intervention support to families of victims and survivors of the 2025 Uromi attack in Edo State.

The beneficiaries include families of 16 persons killed in the incident and 13 others who survived the attack.

The victims, mostly hunters travelling from Rivers State to Kano for Eid celebrations, were reportedly ambushed by a vigilante group and armed youths in Uromi.

Their vehicle was said to have been intercepted before they were attacked.

Speaking during the distribution exercise on Friday, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said the intervention followed a directive by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after it was discovered that an earlier pledge had not been fulfilled.

The disbursement took place at the palace of the District Head, Alhaji Aminu Isa Umar, where cash and food items were presented to the affected families.

Waiya said each of the 16 bereaved families received N300,000, while the 13 survivors were given N200,000 each, alongside two bags of rice.

He explained that the governor had earlier visited the affected community in Turanka to sympathise with the victims’ families after the attack, which claimed about 19 lives.

“We discovered that the pledge was not redeemed, and His Excellency immediately directed that the support be delivered without delay,” Waiya said.

He added that efforts were ongoing to ensure that compensation earlier promised by the Edo State Government is paid, noting that a dedicated bank account had been opened for the beneficiaries.

The commissioner expressed optimism that the Edo State Government would fulfil its commitment, describing the incident as a “national calamity,” and urged affected families to remain patient.

The District Head, Alhaji Aminu Isa Umar, commended the state government for the gesture, stating that it demonstrated the governor’s concern for the welfare of his people.

He, however, noted that no amount of compensation could replace the lives lost in the attack.

Some beneficiaries also expressed appreciation to the state government and offered prayers for continued progress in the state.
