The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a gala and public lecture in Abuja on November 2, 2026, as it renews its commitment to human rights protection, democratic accountability and citizen participation in Nigeria.

The organisation, which emerged 20 years ago in response to Nigeria’s democratic challenges, has championed human rights, civic education and accountable governance through interventions across Kano, Kaduna and the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement issued on Friday, CHRICED Executive Director, Comrade Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, said the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the organisation’s achievements and strengthen its commitment to democratic development

.
He said CHRICED was founded on the belief that democracy must go beyond elections and the transfer of political power to include the protection of citizens’ rights, participation in decision-making and accountability by public office holders.

“Twenty years ago, CHRICED emerged from a conviction that democracy must mean more than elections and the transfer of political power. It must protect people’s rights, give citizens a voice in decisions that affect their lives, and hold those entrusted with public office accountable,” Zikirullahi said.

It will hold those entrusted with public office accountable,” Zikirullahi said.

The anniversary lecture, titled “Reclaiming Civic Space: The Rule of Law, Democratic Accountability, and the Future of Citizen Participation in Nigeria,” will examine concerns over shrinking civic space, weakened institutions, rising intolerance and the need to restore public confidence in governance.

According to the executive director, protecting civic freedoms and strengthening democratic institutions remain essential to Nigeria’s democratic future

“The question before us is not simply whether Nigeria has democratic institutions, but whether those institutions are sufficiently responsive, transparent and accountable to the people they exist to serve,” he said.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, CHRICED will unveil two publications aimed at strengthening civic education and documenting its contributions to democratic development.
