Gov. Yusuf presents appointment letters to 8,588 teachers, hails suspension of NECO fee hike

KANO State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has presented appointment letters to 8,588 teachers as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s education sector and address the shortage of teaching personnel in public schools.
The governor also commended the Federal Government for suspending the proposed increase in the National Examinations Council (NECO) registration fees, describing the decision as a timely intervention that would ease the financial burden on parents and improve access to education for students across the country.
Governor Yusuf spoke during the presentation of appointment letters to the newly recruited teachers at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.
The beneficiaries comprise 4,900 newly recruited primary and secondary school teachers and 3,688 teachers under the ABBA Gida-Gida Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme.
Describing the recruitment as another milestone in his administration’s education reform agenda, the governor said the exercise reflected the government’s commitment to revitalising the sector through sustained investment in human capital.
He reiterated that education remains the foundation of sustainable development, stressing that no society can achieve lasting progress without prioritising learning.
Governor Yusuf disclosed that his administration allocated 31 per cent of the 2026 state budget to education, describing it as one of the highest sectoral allocations in the country.
According to him, the investment is already producing positive results, with Kano emerging as the best-performing state in this year’s NECO examinations.
He emphasised that academic excellence must be complemented by discipline, patriotism and responsible citizenship, adding that the state government is implementing comprehensive reforms to improve school infrastructure, enhance the quality of teaching and provide a more conducive learning environment across the state.
The governor urged the newly employed teachers to discharge their duties with professionalism, integrity and dedication, noting that they had been entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the future of thousands of pupils.
He also expressed appreciation to teachers, education stakeholders and development partners for their continued support towards improving education in Kano State.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described teachers as the foundation of every prosperous nation, saying quality education begins with committed and competent educators.
He commended Governor Yusuf for prioritising education through increased investments in schools, teacher recruitment and other development initiatives, adding that Kano’s achievements deserved national recognition.
The minister urged the newly recruited teachers to justify the confidence reposed in them by serving with dedication, discipline and excellence, noting that their contributions would help produce future leaders capable of driving Nigeria’s economic and social development.
Earlier, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, said the success of any education system depends on competent teachers, adequate learning materials and conducive infrastructure.
He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustaining reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes across the state.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Yusuf Kabir, described education as a collective responsibility and called on wealthy individuals, development partners and community leaders to complement government efforts in strengthening the sector.
He advised the newly recruited teachers to remain disciplined, patient and punctual in the discharge of their duties.
The event featured the formal presentation of appointment letters to the 8,588 teachers, cultural performances by school pupils and entertainment by political musicians.
