Continue repression on media , threatens democracy — CITAD

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has called for stronger protection and improved welfare for journalists in Nigeria, warning that continued repression of the media threatens democratic governance.
In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day, the organisation reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of media practitioners across the country.
CITAD noted that a free and independent media remains critical to democracy, accountability and informed citizen participation. However, it expressed concern that journalists in Nigeria continue to face harassment, arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention and intimidation while carrying out their duties.
According to the organisation, such actions undermine democratic values and weaken public confidence in institutions.
It condemned what it described as increasing repression by both state and non-state actors, urging authorities to uphold press freedom as guaranteed under the Constitution and international human rights frameworks promoted by the United Nations.

The group also highlighted the need to address poor working conditions within the media industry.
It said low remuneration, job insecurity and lack of institutional protection expose journalists to undue influence and compromise professional independence.
CITAD further stressed the link between press freedom and digital rights, noting that unrestricted access to information online is essential for civic engagement. It warned that censorship, surveillance and online harassment pose growing threats to both media freedom and the public’s right to information.
The organisation called for an immediate end to the harassment and detention of journalists, alongside improved welfare and stronger protections for media professionals.
“A society that silences its journalists risks weakening its democracy,” the statement said, adding that CITAD stands in solidarity with journalists across Nigeria.
