KSCHMA aligns with Gov. Yusuf’s health agenda at North-West CEmONC meeting in Kaduna

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving maternal and newborn healthcare delivery through active participation in the North-West Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) Quality Improvement Collaborative Meeting held in Kaduna.
The two-day regional meeting, which took place at the Bafra International Hotel, brought together representatives from North-Western states to strengthen inter-state collaboration, enhance programme implementation and institutionalize quality improvement mechanisms in CEmONC-supported health facilities.
KSCHMA’s participation underscores its alignment with the healthcare transformation agenda of Abba Kabir Yusuf, particularly in expanding equitable access to quality maternal and newborn health services and reducing preventable deaths across Kano State.
A major highlight of the meeting was a comprehensive review of the CEmONC programme, with emphasis on the clearly defined role of Quality Improvement (QI) Teams in driving implementation at facility level. Participants examined hospital performance data, assessed maternal and neonatal health indicators, and identified service delivery gaps to promote evidence-based planning and measurable outcomes.
The collaborative sessions also introduced standardized clinical checklists for the management of Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH), Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia—conditions identified as leading causes of maternal mortality.
The adoption of these tools is expected to strengthen adherence to clinical protocols, improve case management and enhance patient safety in participating facilities.
In addition, structured Maternal Mortality Audit sessions were conducted to review cases, identify systemic and clinical gaps, and recommend corrective actions.
The audit framework is designed to reinforce accountability, promote institutional learning and drive continuous quality improvement across health institutions.
KSCHMA was represented at the meeting by Dr. Musbahu Maimashi on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar.
The agency noted that its presence at the regional forum reflects Kano State’s proactive approach to collaborative learning, data-driven healthcare management and the strengthening of emergency obstetric and newborn care systems in line with the governor’s broader health reform priorities.
The meeting is expected to conclude with renewed commitments from participating states to institutionalize quality improvement practices, strengthen data utilization and accelerate progress toward reducing preventable maternal and newborn mortality across the North-West region.
