FundACause, Nigeria Cancer Society launch ₦100 million campaign for mobile cancer screening vans

FundACause, Nigeria’s leading digital fundraising platform, has partnered with the Nigeria Cancer Society (NCS) to launch a nationwide campaign aimed at raising ₦100 million to improve cancer prevention and early detection across the country.
The initiative, tagged “Shield for Cancer,” was formally unveiled on October 30, 2025, at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.
The campaign seeks to deploy mobile cancer screening vans across all six geopolitical zones, targeting rural and underserved communities where diagnostic services are scarce and late-stage cancer cases are common.
Cancer remains a growing public health threat in Nigeria. According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN 2020), the country records an estimated 113.6 new cancer cases and 74.6 cancer-related deaths per 100,000 people annually.
While the National Cancer Control Plan (2018–2022) estimated around 102,000 new cases and 72,000 deaths each year, recent figures suggest the burden is increasing, highlighting the need for early detection and wider access to preventive services.
Speaking at the launch, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, President of the Nigeria Cancer Society, described the campaign as a vital step toward addressing the widening gap in cancer care.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our collective effort to combat cancer in Nigeria, particularly within underserved rural communities,” Omonisi said. “Many advanced cancer cases originate from areas where access to early screening and preventive care is limited.
This initiative is designed to bridge that gap. We are proud to partner with FundACause and call on all Nigerians, philanthropists, government agencies, and the private sector to support this cause.”
Developed by SystemSpecs Technology Services Limited (STSL), FundACause provides a secure digital platform for individuals, groups, and organisations to raise and donate funds for verified causes. Its involvement in the Shield for Cancer initiative underscores SystemSpecs’ commitment to using technology to drive social change.

By prioritising preventive healthcare, rural outreach, and equitable access to screening, the Shield for Cancer campaign aims to reduce the country’s high cancer mortality rates and strengthen community-driven health initiatives. Organisers are calling on individuals, private sector players, and government bodies to support efforts to reshape the future of cancer care in Nigeria.
