Malam Saidu Sani, Program Officer of the Male Feminists Network (MFN) of the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has said that girl child remains one of the most vulnerable members in the society and often becomes a victim of Gender- Based Violence.( GBV)
He however noted that there is a need for proactive and practical measures to curb this menace,” Sani stated.
He made this known during the International Day of the Girl Child celebrates the voices, achievements, and leadership of girls worldwide, while advocating for their rights and opportunities to thrive in all aspects of life.
He then underscored the importance of the occasion as a platform to advance the rights of the girl child and draw attention to the challenges they continue to face in society.
He emphasized that when girls are provided access to education, skill development, and equal opportunities, they can significantly contribute to societal growth and influence policy transformation.
GBV manifests in various forms—sexual, psychological, emotional, and socio-cultural and each has devastating consequences on its victims.
Through collaboration with teachers, students, traditional and religious leaders, we hope to create a safer and more just society,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Malam Saminu Aliyu noted that while women have traditionally been protected by their families from childhood through adulthood, the persistent need for advocacy to safeguard girls’ rights calls for urgent and collective action from all stakeholders.
“We must identify the existing gaps and work together to bridge them in order to improve the lives of the girl child,” he urged.
