The Kano state government, has said that in effort  to supply portable water across the state, over N7 billion were been  spent on diseel procurement and payment of electricity bills  yearly

The state Commissioner for water resources Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, while given the breakdown of the expenses stated  that a sum of N400 million spent on procurement of diseel, while over N300 million paid to Kano Electricity Distribution Company ( KEDCO) for payment of electricity supply  incurred every month

He  however added that in order to ensure adequate water supply to the teeming masses , especially in the  Kano metropolis, the state government had bought ten high-capacity water pumps worth more than N1 billion for both the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and the Challawa Water Treatment Plant.

Doguwa  added that  the state government  is planning to produce 750 million litres of water per day to meet the demands of residents of Kano city and its environs.

,He further  disclosed this to Journalists at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant near the state capital on Saturday.

He added that ” We want to be producing at least 450 million liters of water per day.But the actual demand now in Kano is 750 million litres per day. So,we are now planning to hit that initial figure of 450 million litres per day,and then build on that,”

He said the government is currently working to achieve an initial target of 450 million litres per day,and then jerk up the level to reach the actual consumption need of 750 million litres.

He emphasised that ” The
governor, being an engineer himself, personally assessed all water treatment plants in the state and identified faulty raw water pumps as the primary issue. To resolve this, he procured ten new pumps, which we are unveiling today,”

He said six pumps each of 110 kilowatts capacity, would be installed at the Challawa Water Treatment Plant, which previously supplied 50 per cent of Kano’s water needs “before being shut down and vandalized recently.”

“The commissioner also said that four pumps,of 160 kilowatts capacity each would be installed at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, and which would restore water supply to Nasarawa and surrounding areas.

Alhaji Doguwa further stated that
Governor Abba Yusuf is planning to expand some water treatment plants including those at Joda and Wudil “that will cover the gap.”

He therefore warned industries, commercial centres and individuals abusing treated water, particularly those diverting it for farming activities to desist from such,or face the wrath of government.

“People are yearning for drinking water, yet some individuals illegally channel treated water to their farms. We are investigating those responsible, and if necessary, we will seize lands found engaging in such practices,” he said.
