Former Senator Shehu Sani, kicked   against the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi’s suggestion that wives should retaliate when their husbands slap them.

This was just as Senator Sani however described this approach as destructive and potentially leading to divorce.

However, Senator Sani emphasised the importance of communication, self-control, and apology in managing anger within a marriage.

He advised couples to take breaks during arguments and avoid escalating the situation with shouting matches.

Sani also warned against resorting to violence as a solution, advising wives to protect themselves by seeking help from family or authorities if their husbands become violent.

Senator Sani made this known while  addressed the growing number of divorced women from Northern Nigeria who move to Abuja, criticizing the portrayal of such women as “glorified prostitutes.”

He argued that these women are simply seeking a better life.

He therefore concluded by emphasising the importance of understanding and tolerating imperfections in marriage, stating that “there is no perfect husband and there is no perfect family.”
