Coalition alleges plot against Barau’s 2027 re-election, clarifies position on Kano deputy governor nomination

Kola Oyelere Kano

A coalition of political stakeholders in Kano State has alleged a plot by unnamed actors to undermine the re-election bid of the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group also clarified that the senator has no objection to the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo as deputy governor of the state, stating that such appointments remain the constitutional prerogative of the governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Addressing a press conference in Kano on Wednesday, Chairman of the Kano State Coalition for Good Governance, Alhaji Tukur Gadanya Mukthar, said the group had credible information that “disgruntled elements” within and outside the state were mobilising resources to challenge Barau’s political standing in Kano North Senatorial District.

He said the coalition, which draws members from all 44 local government areas of the state, views the alleged moves as an attempt to destabilise what it described as widespread support for the senator’s continued representation.

According to the group, Barau’s legislative record and constituency interventions have earned him strong backing among constituents.

It cited his sponsorship and co-sponsorship of nearly 50 bills, including legislation establishing the North West Development Commission, alongside initiatives in education, agriculture and infrastructure.

The coalition listed projects attributed to the senator to include the upgrading of the Federal College of Education, Kano, to a university, the establishment of study centres for the National Open University of Nigeria, and scholarship programmes for students both within Nigeria and abroad.

It also referenced interventions such as road construction, provision of fertiliser to farmers, and installation of solar-powered streetlights.

The group further alleged that a “failed politician,” backed by external interests, had been engaged to challenge Barau in 2027 using what it described as “dubious means.” It, however, expressed confidence that such efforts would fail, citing what it called overwhelming grassroots support for the lawmaker.

It added that Barau’s performance could position him for higher responsibilities in the National Assembly if re-elected, including the possibility of contesting for Senate President.

The coalition called on those allegedly involved in the plot to desist and allow the democratic process to prevail.

It also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support for the senator and Kano State.

No individual or group was specifically named in connection with the alleged plot.
