Kwankwasiyya movement denies reports of Kwankwaso’s planned defection to APC

Kola Oyelere, Kano

The Kwankwasiyya political movement has dismissed reports claiming that its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the allegations as false and misleading.

In a statement issued to journalists in Kano on Tuesday, the movement’s spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, said Kwankwaso has not held any negotiations or discussions with the APC or President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding any planned defection.

According to the statement, the movement expressed concern over what it called the growing circulation of speculative reports and televised commentaries alleging that Kwankwaso had made certain demands as part of a planned move to the ruling party.

“We state clearly, categorically, and without any ambiguity that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has never at any time entered into negotiations, discussions, or meetings with the APC, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, or any proxy for the purpose of defection.

These claims are entirely false, baseless, and deliberately misleading,” the statement said.

The group criticized sections of the media for publishing what it described as unverified political claims and urged journalists and editors to uphold professional standards by relying on credible sources when reporting sensitive political matters.

Mohammed clarified that the last formal meeting between Kwankwaso and President Tinubu took place in January 2024, stressing that no discussions about defection, political bargaining, or party alignment occurred during that meeting. He said any contrary claims were fabricated.

He added that Kwankwaso maintains relationships across party lines, noting that such interactions are normal in a democratic system and should not be misinterpreted as indications of political defection.

The spokesperson further alleged that the reports were part of a coordinated attempt by some political actors to weaken Kwankwaso’s political standing ahead of possible future realignments.

He claimed that some individuals promoting the defection narrative had personal ambitions tied to the APC and were attempting to justify their own political decisions.

Describing Kwankwaso as a disciplined and principled politician, Mohammed said his political strength is rooted in grassroots support rather than elite influence.

He called on the public to disregard what he termed misleading and speculative reports, insisting that there were no negotiations, demands, or discussions of defection involving the former Kano State governor.

“The facts remain unchanged and unequivocal. Kwankwasiyya remains steadfast.

The people remain resolute. And the truth, ultimately, will prevail,” the statement added.
