Kano intensifies water treatment plants rehabilitation to tackle water scarcity

The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to restore potable water supply across the state, with rehabilitation works progressing at the Watari Water Treatment Plant as part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s campaign to revive critical water infrastructure.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, disclosed this after an inspection visit to the Watari Water Treatment Plant alongside the Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, the Managing Director of the Kano State Water Board and other key stakeholders.
Hashim said the immediate objective of the visit was to advance the technical work required to restore clean water supply to Dawanau, Miltara, Bachirawa, Rijiyar Lemo and Kurna communities.
He noted that although engineers were making steady progress, several operational challenges must be addressed before water supply could be fully restored to affected areas.
According to him, the challenges include inadequate power supply at the treatment facility, the need to overhaul high-lift pumps and other critical equipment, as well as tackling persistent illegal connections along the distribution network, which significantly reduce water pressure.
The commissioner said the state’s broader water infrastructure rehabilitation programme was already yielding positive results.
He explained that the Joda and Guzu Guzu water treatment plants, which had remained inactive for more than six years, had resumed operations and were now supplying water to several communities.
Hashim also revealed that the Wudil Water Treatment Plant, previously operating at less than five per cent capacity, had recorded significant improvement following ongoing rehabilitation works.
He added that restoration efforts were also continuing at the Challawa and Tamburawa water treatment plants.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ending water scarcity, saying the administration remained determined to restore reliable potable water supply across Kano.
He appealed to residents to protect public water infrastructure and report illegal water connections, stressing that public cooperation was essential to ensuring clean water reached every neighbourhood in the state.
