Kano records three polio cases, launches fresh immunisation campaign

The Kano State Government has recorded only three cases of polio in the past year, a development described as a significant milestone in the state’s public health efforts.

The Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Emergency Operations Centre while launching a symbolic campaign ahead of the April 2026 polio immunisation exercise.

Yusuf stated that the campaign targets children aged zero to 59 months, with a focus on protecting vulnerable populations across the state.

He noted that more than 7,000 healthcare workers have been mobilised to implement the exercise across all 44 local government areas.

He commended the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf for sustained investment in the health sector, attributing recent progress in disease control to government commitment.

The commissioner called on parents, caregivers, and community members to cooperate fully with vaccination teams, emphasising that widespread participation is critical to achieving comprehensive immunisation coverage.

While acknowledging the contributions of development partners and other stakeholders, Yusuf cautioned that traces of the poliovirus remain in some areas, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and coordinated action.

The campaign forms part of ongoing efforts by the Kano State Government, in collaboration with partners, to achieve the eradication of polio.
