Kola Oyelere, Kano
Abba Kabir Yusuf has flagged off the distribution of 54,600 bags of rice to cushion the hardship faced by less privileged residents during the Ramadan period in Kano State.
The initiative, announced in a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, was officially launched on Saturday at Maganda Road in Kano.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Yusuf described the intervention as a yearly tradition aimed at supporting residents during the holy month of Ramadan.
“It is my singular honour and privilege to be with you today for this annual flag-off of Ramadan support distribution for the year 1447 AH,” the governor said.
He disclosed that the intervention would cover all the 44 local government areas of the state and other selected beneficiaries.
According to him, a total of 91 trucks of rice—equivalent to 54,600 bags of 50kg each—have been earmarked for distribution.
Out of the 91 trucks, 44 will be allocated directly to the 44 local government areas, while the remaining 47 trucks will be distributed to selected groups and individuals across the state.
To ensure transparency and accountability, the governor announced the constitution of committees at both state and local government levels to supervise the supply, distribution and delivery of the rice.
“At the state level, the committee is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, while the Ministry of Agriculture serves as the coordinating body,” he stated.
Governor Yusuf also called on other stakeholders, including the Federal Government and well-meaning individuals, to collaborate in easing the economic burden on citizens during Ramadan.
In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, commended the governor for the initiative, noting that it would significantly reduce anxiety among residents during the fasting period.
Similarly, the ALGON Chairperson, Sa’adatu Yushau Soja, expressed appreciation to the governor for involving local governments in the exercise and assured that the items would be judiciously distributed to intended beneficiaries.
