ICPC Appoints Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim as ACAN Provost

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has appointed Professor Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim as the new Provost of the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN).

The commission announced the appointment during its 2026 Retreat held on Monday, January 26, 2026. Professor Ibrahim succeeds Professor Tunde Babawale, whose tenure has ended.

Professor Ibrahim, a distinguished academic and administrator, currently serves as the Director of the International Centre at the University of Abuja. He previously held key positions at the institution, including Head of the Department of Political Science and Director of the Centre for Legislative Studies.

The ICPC described the new ACAN Provost as a scholar with vast experience in governance, international relations, and development studies.

His academic work is closely aligned with the academy’s mandate, particularly through his development of the “post-colonial internalism” theory, which highlights corruption as a major impediment to Africa’s development.

Over the years, Professor Ibrahim has produced significant research on leadership, governance, and corruption in Nigeria. His academic contributions include more than a dozen books and over 100 journal articles.

He has also received global recognition through fellowships from reputable institutions such as the Social Science Research Council and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Additionally, he has participated in major international policy platforms, including the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where he contributed comparative and global perspectives on governance and development issues.

The ICPC expressed confidence that Professor Ibrahim’s appointment would enhance ACAN’s research capabilities, strengthen training programmes, and boost international collaboration, thereby reinforcing the academy’s role in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.

The Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria serves as the ICPC’s specialised institution for research, training, integrity studies, and professional education aimed at supporting anti-corruption initiatives both within and outside Nigeria.
