Kano police warn residents on harmattan season, festive period security risks

Kola Oyelere, Kano

As the Harmattan season sets in and the year-end festivities approach, the Kano State Police Command has urged residents to heighten vigilance and adopt proactive safety measures to guard against seasonal hazards and rising criminal activities.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police highlighted that the Harmattan and festive period are typically marked by increased vehicular movement, bustling commercial activities, and heightened social events — conditions that often lead to higher risks of road traffic accidents, fire outbreaks, farmers-herders conflicts, and incidents of sexual violence.

Kiyawa noted that, in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered intensified 24-hour patrols and enhanced visibility policing across Kano State.

According to the statement, all Heads of Departments, Squadron Commanders, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders have been directed to:

Strengthen patrol operations in all parts of the state.
Deepen community engagement through dialogue with traditional, religious, and community leaders, market unions, and youth groups.
Bolster intelligence-gathering networks.
Conduct continuous orientation and sensitization within communities.
The initiative, the Command stated, aims to foster stronger collaboration between the police and the public, enhance crime prevention, ensure peaceful coexistence, and enable rapid response to emergencies throughout the festive season.

Residents were advised to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and to promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station. The Command provided dedicated emergency contact numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926.

Additionally, members of the public can reach the Command via the NPF Rescue Me mobile application or through its verified social media pages — Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok — under the handle Kano State Police Command.

CP Bakori reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while assuring Kano residents of continued peace and security throughout the festive period and beyond.
