The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) aimed at promoting integrity, accountability, and professional ethics in the engineering sector.

However, the  MoU was signed on Thursday at the ICPC headquarters by the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, and COREN’s President/Chairman, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar.
Accordingly, the agreement is aimed at building synergy between the two agencies to combat corruption and improve professional standards in engineering regulation.

Dr. Aliyu stated that the importance of the partnership, noting that both ICPC and COREN are “critical to the survival” of the nation. He said the collaboration will enhance monitoring of government projects under the ICPC’s Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative (CEPTI), using COREN’s technical expertise to ensure projects meet approved standards and designs.

While highlighting the concerns over substandard projects and building collapses, Dr. Aliyu warned that engineers found guilty of professional misconduct in corrupt practices would be referred to COREN for disciplinary action. “ICPC cannot be everywhere; that is why we need you to draw our attention to areas you find wanting in the field. Do not allow people to lose confidence in you,” he urged.

Speaking at the occasion, Prof. Abubakar reaffirmed COREN’s readiness to work with ICPC, noting that the MoU review and signing were necessary to strengthen their existing relationship and ensure enforcement of sanctions against violators of engineering regulations.

However, the  collaboration is expected to foster transparency in project delivery, safeguard public interest, and restore confidence in Nigeria’s engineering regulatory system.
