Kola Oyelere, Kano
KANO — Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has inaugurated a Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and signed an Executive Order aimed at tackling thuggery and related criminal activities across the state.
The move, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, is part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen the fight against drug abuse and improve public safety.
Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Yusuf described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats facing the state’s youthful population, warning that it fuels violent crimes, destroys families, weakens the economy and undermines social stability.
He said the newly inaugurated Task Force would coordinate Kano’s response to drug abuse through intelligence gathering, law enforcement, public enlightenment, rehabilitation programmes and collaboration with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
The governor pledged full government support for the committee, including adequate funding, operational vehicles, office accommodation, logistics and security backing, while assuring that the Task Force would enjoy operational independence to effectively carry out its mandate.
Yusuf also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding rehabilitation services for victims of drug abuse, noting that separate rehabilitation centres had already been established for male and female patients to facilitate their recovery and reintegration into society.
He explained that the Executive Order against thuggery would provide a stronger legal framework for dismantling criminal gangs, curbing political violence and complementing the efforts of security agencies in maintaining law and order across Kano State.
In his acceptance speech, Chairman of the Task Force, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in him and other members of the committee.
He assured the government and the people of Kano that the Task Force would discharge its responsibilities with integrity, professionalism and impartiality.
Rimingado said the committee would work closely with security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, educational institutions and community leaders to combat drug abuse and promote lasting peace across the state.
He described the establishment of the Task Force as a clear demonstration of the governor’s determination to protect the future of Kano’s youth and strengthen public safety.
Governor Yusuf urged residents to support the initiative by providing credible information and cooperating with security agencies, stressing that the fight against drug abuse and thuggery requires the collective efforts of government and the public.
He expressed confidence that the combined implementation of the Executive Order and the activities of the Multi-Agency Task Force would significantly reduce drug-related crimes and contribute to a safer, more peaceful and prosperous Kano State.
