The Kano State Council of Ulama has pledged to mobilise residents across the state’s 44 local government areas to support the Centre for Information Technology and Development’s (CITAD) Plant One Million Trees (P1MT) campaign.

The council’s chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, gave the assurance, when a team from the campaign visited the council in Kano to seek its support for the environmental initiative.

Khalil said the campaign aligned with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which encourage tree planting and environmental protection.

He explained that trees provide lasting benefits to humans and animals, stressing that planting them constitutes an act of ongoing charity, known in Islam as Sadakat-ul-Jariyya.

“The Prophet mentioned that we should plant trees and that animals that eat from it, humans that eat from it, and people that stay under their shades would be counted as ‘Sadakat-ud-Jariyya’, for us,
both here and in the hereafter,” he said.

The cleric urged residents to embrace tree planting as a religious and social responsibility, noting that the practice would help protect the environment and mitigate the effects of climate change.

He also appealed to CITAD to provide seedlings for distribution to members of the council across the 44 local government areas to encourage wider participation in the campaign.

Khalil commended the organisation for its environmental advocacy and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to mobilising residents to support the initiative.

Earlier, a member of the P1MT team, Buhari Abba, said CITAD launched the campaign in September 2026 to address desertification, vegetation loss and climate change across the 19 northern states.

Abba explained that the initiative aims to plant and nurture one million indigenous trees across Northern Nigeria within one year, with the campaign scheduled to end in September 2027.

He said CITAD was collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, to achieve the target.

According to him, the campaign has an online portal, p1mt.ng, where members of the public can register their tree-planting activities to facilitate documentation, accountability and monitoring of the trees’ survival.

The P1MT team urged residents to participate by planting trees, nurturing them to maturity and uploading details of their activities to the portal.

It said sustained public participation would be essential to achieving the campaign’s target and promoting environmental sustainability across Northern Nigeria.
