Twelve inmates have been released from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre in Kano as part of humanitarian activities marking the 63rd birthday of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The release was facilitated by the Head of Health Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), under which the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) coordinated healthcare interventions for the beneficiaries.

The gesture, according to the agency, reflects Governor Yusuf’s commitment to compassion, social justice and inclusive governance, particularly towards vulnerable and underserved populations in the state.

The freed inmates were beneficiaries of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme during their incarceration, through which they accessed healthcare services at the custodial centre.

KSCHMA disclosed that arrangements have been concluded to ensure the seamless continuation of their healthcare coverage at KSCHMA-accredited health facilities closest to their places of residence.

It would be recalled that in January 2025, the Kano State Government, under the directive of Governor Yusuf, enrolled all inmates across custodial centres in the state into the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme.

The initiative was aimed at ensuring access to quality healthcare services for inmates while in custody.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr Rahila Aliyu Muktar, described the release as symbolic and impactful, noting that it reflects the values and vision of the present administration.

“As we commemorate the 63rd birthday of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, this intervention highlights his unwavering commitment to dignity, compassion and the wellbeing of all citizens, including those within custodial facilities,” she said.

Dr Muktar added that the agency’s responsibility to the beneficiaries would not end with their release, stressing that they would continue to access quality healthcare services at accredited facilities near their homes.

She further emphasized the importance of continuity of healthcare in supporting recovery, stability and successful reintegration into society.

“Healthcare is a fundamental right. Ensuring uninterrupted access to medical services for these individuals supports their reintegration and reflects KSCHMA’s mandate to provide equitable healthcare coverage to all residents of Kano State, regardless of status or circumstance,” she stated.

KSCHMA also commended the Nigerian Correctional Service, the management of the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre and other relevant stakeholders for their cooperation in the successful implementation of the initiative.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to advancing universal health coverage in Kano State through inclusive policies, strategic partnerships and impactful interventions aligned with the vision of the current administration.
