Crisis facing  Yoruba community in Kano :Gov. Yusuf set up 11 man committee to resolve

THE Kano state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf,has established an  11 man committee,to investigate and resolve unhealthy crisis and bitterness bedeviling the two groups of Yoruba community in Kano state

However,
It will be recalled that the internal crisis facing the two groups  had taken a frightening dimension ,as the group loyal to the Sarki Yoruba Oba Murtala Otisese and the other  new Obaship created for some local government councils  in the state, had generated to accusations and counter accusations among  the duo

However, been disturbed by this unfolding  scenero,the special adviser on inter community relation for Yoruba affairs, to the governor Yusuf, Alhaji Abdulsalam Abiola Abdulateef , informed the state governor on the need to look into matter causing the infighting among the two groups

However,on Thursday, the State Secretary to the State Government (SDG) Dr.Baffa Bichi, on behalf of governor Yusuf, inaugurated  the committee tagged “members of the reconciliatory  committee on the prevailing conflicts / crisis within the Yoruba community stakeholders residing in Kano state,” to unraveling and find a lasting solution to the crisis

Dr.Bichi while read out a  six terms of references to the committee headed by Professor Usman Muhammad(Zunnurain) said that the committee” to invite the two groups to the conflict within the Yoruba community aimed at addressing the crisis”

Other terms of references are ,” to invite relevant associations , interest groups and individuals that reside in Kano to make written/ oral submission related to the crisis”

While the committee is also to dialogue with all organizations or institutions,such as Kano emirate council because of complicities surrounding certain appointments by the council”

Also,to find out the immediate and remote causes of the crisis and roles played by various internal / external lparties

And to proffer solutions/ recommendations to the identified remote and immediate causes of the crisis with a view to resolving or ameliorating the situation

While the committee must submit report to Government, within a period of four weeks from the date of inauguration

However,in his respond the chairman man of the committee, Professor Muhammad, thanked the state government for honour done on them for appointed them to the committee

He then assured the state government that they would not disappoint the confidence reposed on them and they would the finding without fear or favour

Speaking in the same vein,the former state chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Bishop Ransome Bello ,stated that with the high caliber of people appointed as this noble committee,the task of find a lasting solution to the bedeviling unnecessary crisis would be nip in the bud

On his own, Alhaji Abdulateef,the special adviser on intercommunity relation ,called on the entire Yoruba community to give a peace a chance to reign adding that the two groups are well respected personalities hence the need for them to cooperate with the committee on its assignment

Abdulateef added that the Yoruba were noted for their mutual ways of reconcile as well been held in high esteem for their culture and respec, therefore they must be united and not allowing infighting to cause disharmony among their rank and file members

Making this call the ICPC Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Mr. Hassan Salihu, during a one-day training for Kano online journalists, organized by the Association of Kano Online Journalists (ASKOJ) under the theme, “Effective Reportage of ICPC’s Operation and Initiatives.” According to paper presented on the occasion,titled “Online Media and ICPC Information Management Process and Policy,” Mr. Salihu however emphasized that fighting corruption is a collective responsibility and a sacred duty for all Nigerian citizens, irrespective of religion or tribal affiliations He stated that online journalists play ,a significant role in raising public awareness about the dangers of corruption, which he said is holding the country back economically, politically, and socially. He also noted that online media is the fastest means of disseminating news to the public. While speaking at the occasion, the Kano Resident Commissioner of ICPC, Barrister Ibrahim Abubakar Kaugama, disclosed that the training was authorized by the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, as part of efforts to strengthen the relationship between online journalists and the Commission. Speaking on his behalf Abubakar Jibril, Kaugama discussed the ICPC’s engagement with the media, categorizing information as basic, confidential, and classified. He also elaborated on Section 6, Subsection E of the ICPC Act, 2000, which empowers the Commission to conduct its operations according to specific guidelines. Furthermore, he provided a general definition of corruption as outlined in Section 19 of the ICPC Act, 2000. He said that ” Corruption is generally referred to as the abuse of entrusted power or position for conferring undue gain or benefit to another,” Kaugama explained. He then mentioned some of the Commission’s achievements from 2019 to 2023, including organizational reforms, capacity assessments, improved administrative oversight, the utilization and optimization of forensic investigative infrastructure, and the upgrade of new interview rooms. However,the the Chairman of ASKOJ, Yakubu Salisu, enumerated background on the association, which was established in 2020 with the goal of uniting professional online journalists in Kano State under one umbrella to ensure coordination and uphold journalistic ethics such as truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness, and public accountability. He Therefore added that ” Our engagement today with the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is in fulfillment of Chapter 2, Section 22 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which empowers the press to uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people,” Salisu stated. He hinted that ” As members of the fourth estate, the public relies heavily on us for timely and accurate dissemination of information about government, governance, policies, and other relevant matters that concern their lives and livelihood.” He then stated that the session was part of ongoing efforts to empower ASKOJ members with the necessary information to enhance their professional competence and ability to strike a balance between holding public officeholders accountable and respecting individual rights in news reporting.
