A Legacy of Excellence: The NUJ’s ‘Two A’s’ – Abbas and Abba – Pass the Torch
By Kabiru Haruna
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has bid farewell to its outgoing executive committee, led by the dynamic duo of Abbas Ibrahim and Abba Murtala, who have left an indelible mark on the union.
During their tenure, they steered the NUJ with a perfect blend of legal expertise, creative writing, and visionary leadership.
Abbas Ibrahim, a seasoned legal practitioner and journalist, brought his vast experience to the helm, driving the union with legal ethics and a commitment to maintaining law and order.
Abba Murtala, a prolific writer and creative genius, led the secretariat with flair, making the union a better place for all members.
Together, they implemented a range of initiatives, from welfare packages to journalist protection, and revived the union’s spirit. Their leadership was marked by a distinct lack of quarrels, a testament to their ability to work harmoniously towards a common goal.
As they step down, they leave behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. Their contributions have cemented their place in the annals of NUJ history, alongside other notable leaders like Muhammad Garba, who proudly attributes his success to the union.
The NUJ’s history is a rich one, spanning over a century. Founded in 1907 in the UK, it has been a champion of journalists’ rights, press freedom, and ethical journalism. Today, it continues to play a vital role in shaping the journalism profession, adapting to new challenges while upholding its core values.
As the baton is passed to a new generation of leaders, the NUJ remains a beacon of excellence, thanks to the dedication and vision of leaders like Abbas and Abba. Their impact will be felt for years to come, inspiring future generations of journalists to strive for greatness.
