Kano approves upgrade of five PHCs to general hospitals

The Kano State Government has approved the upgrade of five Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to General Hospitals as part of efforts to expand access to secondary healthcare services across the state.
The affected facilities are the PHCs in Garun Malam, Kumbotso, Ghari, Garko and Kachako.
The state government said the decision was in line with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and bringing comprehensive medical services closer to underserved communities.

Following the approval, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board (HMB) has commenced arrangements for the immediate takeover and assessment of the five facilities.
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, has constituted a team to visit the facilities and conduct a comprehensive assessment of their existing infrastructure, human resources, equipment and other requirements needed for their conversion to General Hospitals.
According to the government, the team will identify gaps and determine the additional requirements necessary for the smooth commencement of operations at the upgraded facilities.
It will also submit its findings and recommendations to the state government for immediate action.
The upgrade, the government said, is expected to improve access to secondary healthcare services in the benefiting local government areas, reduce pressure on existing general and specialist hospitals, strengthen referral pathways and improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, and the HMB Executive Secretary expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for approving the upgrade, describing it as another milestone in the ongoing repositioning of the state’s healthcare system.
They said the decision would help ensure that residents have access to timely, affordable and quality healthcare services closer to their communities.
The Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board also assured that efforts would be made to ensure the immediate and effective implementation of the upgrade.
Residents of Garun Malam, Kumbotso, Ghari, Garko and Kachako are expected to benefit from the expansion of secondary healthcare services once the transition of the facilities is completed.
