Renewed hope cup: Kano, NFF unite Northern youths through
Football, with first winner to receive N10 million

Kola Oyelere, Kano

The Kano State Government, in partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has unveiled the Renewed Hope Cup, a regional football championship aimed at using sports to promote peace, unity and youth development across Northern Nigeria, with a first winner to receive N10 million

The tournament, tagged “The Game Changer,” will bring together 20 youth clubs representing the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with the competition scheduled to commence next month in Kano.

The winners will receive ₦10 million, while the second and third-placed teams will take home ₦5 million and ₦2 million, respectively

Unveiling the initiative on Monday, the Special Adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Sani Musa Danja, said the championship was designed to strengthen inter-state relationships, discourage youth violence and provide opportunities for talented young footballers.

Danja described football as a powerful instrument for peacebuilding, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

“We want young people to see themselves as partners in building peace rather than instruments of conflict. This tournament is designed to unite them through a common passion,” he said.

He explained that the championship would go beyond football by incorporating sustained campaigns against drug abuse, criminality and other social vices affecting young people across the region.

According to him, the tournament would also expose promising players to professional opportunities, as professional scouts, European coaches and football marketers are expected to be in Kano to identify exceptional talents.

Danja said the initiative would therefore provide participants with a pathway into professional football while promoting positive youth engagement.

The championship will begin with a group-stage format before progressing to the knockout rounds, with the grand finale scheduled to take place at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano.

.
The organisers said the prize money was intended not only to reward sporting excellence but also to encourage young people to channel their energy into productive activities and strengthen bonds among communities across Northern Nigeria.

The Renewed Hope Cup is expected to combine football, talent discovery and peace advocacy in an effort to foster stronger relationships among youths from the region ahead of the 2027 elections.
