NDLEA arrests suspect with 1,499 bottles of codeine syrup in Kano

Kola Oyelere, Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested a 45-year-old suspect, Ashiru Bala, for allegedly possessing 1,499 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine in Kano State.

The arrest was confirmed in a press statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.

According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended on February 25, 2026, at his residence in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area following an intelligence-led operation by operatives of the agency.

The Commander of the Kano Strategic Command, CN DY Lawal, said Bala was intercepted after transporting the consignment from Abuja, adding that the drugs were meant to be delivered to a local drug dealer in Kano for illicit consumption.

Lawal further disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed the seized codeine syrups were allegedly intended for distribution during the upcoming Sallah celebrations.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to transporting illicit substances for about two years. He also revealed that he previously worked in township services in Abuja for four years and received substantial payments for moving such consignments.

The NDLEA commander said the suspect’s confession indicated that he was fully aware of the illegal nature of the activity.

“This arrest is a demonstration of our commitment to protecting communities from the harms of illicit substances,” Lawal said.
He added that intelligence-driven enforcement operations, particularly during periods of increased demand such as festive seasons, remain central to the command’s strategy.

“We will sustain pressure on drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice,” he said.
The operation forms part of the ongoing “Operation Ramadan Mubarak”, launched by the Kano Strategic Command in line with the renewed national campaign for a drug-free society championed by the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd).

The agency reiterated its determination to intensify surveillance and enforcement activities across Kano and neighbouring areas to curb the distribution and abuse of illicit drugs.
