Kano Government seeks probe of Ganduje, Senator Jibrin over ‘Inflammatory’ Security Remarks

By Kola Oyelere, Kano

The Kano State Government has called for an immediate investigation into former Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin over what it described as inflammatory and reckless comments capable of inciting public unrest.

The demand was announced on Friday evening during a press conference that followed the 34th State Executive Council meeting. Addressing journalists around 7 p.m., the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, said the Council deliberated extensively on statements credited to the two political figures.

According to Waiya, Ganduje and Jibrin had claimed that Kano State was increasingly vulnerable to banditry and further alleged that the state government was planning to recruit 12,000 individuals into a religious policing outfit known as Khairul Nas.

The Council condemned the remarks, describing them as “inciting, reckless, and capable of undermining ongoing security efforts” by both the Kano State Government and the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Commissioner noted that the comments became more concerning following an attack by suspected bandits on border communities in the state less than 48 hours after the statements were made. This raised questions, he said, about whether the remarks were premeditated or connected to the incident.

Waiya added that the Council reaffirmed its appreciation to security agencies and the Federal Government for their continued support in fighting insecurity in the state. It also called for the arrest and probe of the former governor over what it described as an attempt to create an illegal militia.

The government urged public figures to avoid making statements that could provoke tension or undermine security operations, assuring residents of its firm commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order across Kano State.

As at the time of filling this report all efforts made to get reactions of the duo proved unsuccessful
