Kano Govt trains health workers from 100 PHCs on hypertension, diabetes care

Oyelere Kola, Kano

The Kano State Ministry of Health has commenced a large-scale training programme for healthcare workers from 100 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) on the Nigeria Hypertension Control Initiative (NHCI) and diabetes services, as part of efforts to strengthen early detection and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across the state.

Speaking during the flag-off on Friday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah and commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support toward revitalising PHCs in the state.

He said the state has recorded remarkable progress in expanding hypertension services, recalling that the NHCI started with only 12 PHCs in 2020, increased to 52 centres in 2022, and has now reached 310 under the current administration, with 620 healthcare workers already trained.

Dr. Yusuf disclosed that the new training will equip two health workers each from 100 additional PHCs, raising the total number of benefiting centres to 410.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all PHCs across Kano State are fully saturated with standardised hypertension and diabetes services, aimed at reducing the growing burden of NCDs.
