Tragedy struck with two  people lost their lives, and one person was injured after falling into an abandoned well in Unguwar Malamin Kurunsumau, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said that the

tragic incident occurred on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at about 6:50 p.m.,
Abdullahi stated  that the fire service received a distress call from a resident, Zakariya Adamu, who reported that a four-year-old boy, Abubakar Ahmad, had accidentally fallen into an old, disused well, which was previously used for pumping refuse.

The statement reads :In an attempt to rescue the boy, a 22-year-old man, Abubakar Muhammad, jumped into the well but was also trapped. Another man, Jibrin Muhammad, 30, joined the rescue attempt but similarly became trapped,”

He stated that rescue teams from the state fire service headquarters were immediately deployed to the scene. All three victims were pulled out, but two were found unconscious and later confirmed dead. Only Abubakar Muhammad survived.

He however disclosed that the  injured victim was taken to the Kura Local Government Area Specialist Hospital for medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased were handed over to officers at the Kura Police Division.

Abdullahi said the fire service has since cautioned residents to properly secure or cover abandoned wells to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
