Mass Communication Student Urges Responsible Use of AI in Learning

A Mass Communication student of the University of Maiduguri, Oladepo Matthew Olatunbosun, has called on students to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a learning aid while avoiding excessive dependence that could undermine critical thinking and creativity.
In a paper titled “The Influence of Artificial Intelligence on Students’ Learning Habits,” Olatunbosun said AI has significantly transformed the way students study by providing quick access to information, personalized learning experiences, and a wide range of educational resources.
According to him, AI has become an important tool in modern education, enabling students to complete assignments, conduct research, and understand complex topics more efficiently, thereby improving their academic performance.
He, however, warned that overreliance on AI could have unintended consequences, including a decline in students’ ability to think critically, solve problems independently, and generate original ideas.
The undergraduate noted that excessive use of AI may also weaken creativity and reduce opportunities for students to develop essential academic and analytical skills.
Olatunbosun described Artificial Intelligence as a valuable educational resource when used responsibly, stressing that it should complement, rather than replace, students’ personal efforts in learning.
He urged students to strike a balance between using AI tools and engaging in independent study, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving to maximize the benefits of technology while building lasting knowledge and skills.
