A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, has commended Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for nominating Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election, describing the decision as a strategic move that would strengthen the administration’s electoral prospects across the state’s 44 local government areas.

Kwankwaso, who is the Director of Finance at the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, made the remarks on Monday while reacting to the governor’s announcement.

He said Garo’s political experience, loyalty and strong relationship with grassroots stakeholders made him well suited for the role.

According to him, Garo’s performance as Commissioner for Local Government during the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje contributed significantly to the transformation of local councils across Kano State.

“His track record is well known to everyone. During his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government, he played a key role in transforming the councils and built enduring relationships with political, religious and traditional leaders across the 44 local government areas,” Kwankwaso said.

He also recalled that Garo previously served as Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area and later as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, saying those positions further strengthened his grassroots political network.

Kwankwaso, who was a former three time commissioner for rural and community development then
described the deputy governor as a loyal and respectful politician who had consistently demonstrated commitment to his superiors and the administration.

He expressed confidence that Governor Yusuf’s decision would boost the APC’s chances in the 2027 elections and thanked the governor for retaining Garo as his running mate.

Governor Yusuf had earlier announced Garo’s nomination, citing his loyalty, commitment and passion for the development of Kano State since assuming office as deputy governor.

The governor said he was satisfied with their working relationship, noting that Garo had shown competence, dedication and a strong sense of responsibility in the discharge of his duties.

“I have no regrets for choosing Garo as my deputy in the last few months, and he has proven to be the right choice so far. I have every confidence in him,” Yusuf said.

He also passed a vote of confidence on the deputy governor, describing him as a dependable partner whose contributions had strengthened the administration’s efforts to deliver development across Kano State.
