Kano Govt Pledges Support for NIPR, Promises Land for Secretariat

The Kano State Government has pledged continued support for the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), including the allocation of land for the construction of a permanent secretariat for the institute in the state.
The Director-General, Media and Publicity to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, disclosed this while receiving members of the NIPR Kano State Chapter who paid a courtesy visit to the Government House as part of activities to sensitise the public ahead of the World Public Relations Forum scheduled to hold in Abuja in November.
Dawakin Tofa, who represented Governor Yusuf at the event, said the governor had directed the NIPR state chapter to formally submit a request for land allocation for the construction of its proposed secretariat.
He said the governor also assured members of the institute of his administration’s commitment to their welfare, safety and professional development.
According to him, the state government is prepared to partner with both the national and Kano chapters of NIPR to promote training and retraining of practitioners and ensure adherence to professional ethics.
Dawakin Tofa said Kano State would participate fully in the World Public Relations Forum, adding that the governor would support the event as part of his administration’s commitment to the public relations profession.
He also said the governor had assured journalists and public relations practitioners of their safety while carrying out their duties across the state.

The media aide disclosed that the Kano State Government spent more than N200 million in 2025 on various forms of support and welfare for media and public relations practitioners.
He added that more than N150 million had been spent in 2026 under his office on welfare interventions for professionals in the media and public relations sectors.
Dawakin Tofa explained that the interventions included mobility support, working equipment, accommodation and medical assistance to members of the profession.
He further disclosed that Kano State Government would sponsor a Northwest Regional Media Security Summit expected to take place at the Government House in the coming week, with media and public relations practitioners expected to participate as facilitators and participants.
Earlier, the Kano State Chairman of NIPR, Aliyu Yusuf, thanked Governor Yusuf for the support and recognition accorded the institute.
Also speaking, Professor Ya’u Sule Ya’u of the Department of Mass Communication Bayero University Kanoexplained that the NIPR walk was organised to create awareness about the forthcoming World Public Relations Forum.
He said the forum, scheduled for November 15 to 21, 2026, in Abuja, would bring together public relations practitioners from Nigeria and other parts of the world.
According to him, the event would also provide an opportunity for practitioners to review the definition and practice of public relations in view of emerging developments in the profession.

He noted that the widely referenced definition of public relations adopted at a 1978 forum in Mexico had remained an important reference point for practitioners and students.
Professor Ya’u said the forthcoming gathering in Abuja would consider emerging trends and developments in the profession and explore their incorporation into a new global definition of public relations.

The Kano NIPR delegation subsequently presented its message on the forthcoming forum to the state government through the Director-General, Media and Publicity.
