Kano approves N144bn projects, ₦1.2trn supplementary budget

The Kano State Executive Council has approved projects and government commitments worth ₦144.005 billion as part of measures to accelerate infrastructure development and improve public services across the state.
According to the State commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the decisions reflected the state government’s commitment to addressing the infrastructure and developmental needs of residents.
The approvals were granted at the council’s 41st meeting held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the Malam Aminu Kano House, Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.
The meeting, chaired by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, considered proposals covering healthcare, education, roads, water supply, power, housing, human capital development, transportation, security and cultural development.
The Ministry of Works received the largest allocation, with approvals totalling ₦84.976 billion for road construction and rehabilitation, public buildings and other infrastructure projects.
Among the major works approved are the reconstruction of the Rawul–Gani–Sitti–Masu–Gomo Road in Sumaila Local Government Area at ₦16.690 billion, construction of the Zaria Road–Gurjiya–Yankatsari–Rijiyar Gwangwan Road at ₦8.655 billion, and additional works on the RMK Flyover–Obasanjo Flyover–Ibb Road–Mazugal Junction–Katsina Road corridor, including the Hajj Camp Road, at ₦8.880 billion.
The council also approved ₦6.797 billion for the review of the contract for Suleiman Crescent and Lamido Crescent in Nassarawa GRA, while ₦6.037 billion was approved for the determination and re-award of the Dawakin Kudu–Lahadin Makole Road project.
In the education sector, the council approved ₦14.276 billion for various interventions, including school renovations, provision of furniture and facilities, boarding-school food supplies, institutional accreditation and counterpart funding for the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grant.
A total of ₦6.119 billion was approved as counterpart funding for the statutory UBEC matching grant.
The health sector received ₦2.609 billion for the rehabilitation and upgrading of healthcare facilities across the state.
The approvals include the upgrade of Kibiya and Albasu Primary Healthcare Centres to general hospitals at ₦521.948 million and ₦679.375 million, respectively.
Other health projects include the renovation of Karaye Emirate Specialist Hospital, rehabilitation of Shekar Barde Primary Healthcare Centre in Kumbotso and upgrading of Yakasai Zumunta Clinic and Maternity to provide 24-hour services.
Under the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning, the council approved ₦11.063 billion, including ₦4.438 billion for traffic bollards at strategic locations and ₦4.445 billion for reflective materials on streetlights, traffic signs and roadside infrastructure.
The council also approved ₦2.180 billion to settle a land dispute involving the Kano Infectious Diseases Research Centre, popularly known as Pfizer Hospital, in Tamburawa.
For water resources, environment and climate change, ₦2.408 billion was approved, including ₦1.779 billion for energy bills to KEDCO and diesel fuel covering May to August 2026.
The power and renewable energy sector received ₦1.246 billion, including ₦636 million for power supply to the Tamburawa and Watari Water Treatment Plants and ₦610 million for two generating sets and MV panels at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.
The council also approved ₦1.160 billion for the construction of the Phase II perimeter fence and gate at Amana City, while the Office of the Secretary to the State Government received approval for ₦435 million for operational vehicles for the State Hisba Board.
In the area of women empowerment, the council approved ₦368.7 million for the establishment and equipping of a Women Skills Acquisition Centre at Kofar Ruwa.
Beyond project approvals, the council approved the acquisition, in the overriding public interest, of Saymays Specialist Hospital at Gandun Albasa and a private property adjacent to the Infectious Diseases Hospital and Abubakar Imam Urology Centre on France Road.
It also approved a public-private partnership arrangement for the development of the Kano Energy and SME Industrial Park at the AKK Industrial Layout, Tamburawa.
The council further approved the hosting of KANFEST 2026, the annual Kano Art and Cultural Festival, aimed at promoting the state’s cultural heritage, tourism and creative industries.
Another major decision was the approval of the 2026 Supplementary Budget/Amendment of ₦1.201 trillion, which the council directed should be transmitted to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and approval.
On the condition of the Eastern Bypass–Tsamiya Babba–Larabawar Abasawa–Nera Roundabout road along Ringim Road, the council directed the Ministry of Works to prepare and submit a detailed Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation (BEME) for consideration.
The council meeting also featured the presentation of various merit awards to Governor Yusuf in recognition of his contributions to the development of Kano State.
