Kano Correspondents’ Chapel Marks One Year, Calls for Greater Unity and Professionalism

The Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has marked the first anniversary of its current executive, with its Chairman, Murtala Adewale, calling on journalists to strengthen unity, professionalism and collaboration in advancing the journalism profession and promoting national development.
Adewale made the call during the Chapel’s 12-Month Stewardship Presentation and Anniversary Celebration held at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano, where he presented the scorecard of his administration’s first year in office.
He attributed the achievements recorded during the period to teamwork, dedication and the support of members, pledging that the executive would continue to prioritise members’ welfare, professional development and institutional growth.
“Our responsibility is to remain united and work together in promoting ethical journalism and building greater synergy among media professionals for the progress of the profession and the prosperity of our country,” he said.
Presenting the administration’s stewardship report, Adewale highlighted key achievements, including the establishment of a cooperative society with an initial capital base of ₦10 million and the facilitation of ₦8.5 million in loan facilities for members.
Other milestones included a ₦2 million medical intervention for a member, Ramadan food distribution worth ₦2.5 million, the securing of an additional ₦30,000 monthly special gesture for members, installation of unlimited 5G internet service and DSTV at the chapel, office sanitation services, and the procurement of an electric kettle for members.
He also listed the reactivation of the chapel’s bank account, creation of a functional Facebook page, provision of refreshments during meetings, organisation of a four-day retreat in Kaduna, institution of Distinguished Awards of Excellence, installation of an Olympic-standard table tennis facility and the facilitation of two Hajj slots for members.
Speaking at the event, Associate Professor Sule Ya’u Sule commended the leadership of the chapel for what he described as an outstanding performance within one year, noting that the administration had demonstrated transparency, accountability and commitment to members’ welfare.
A former Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council and National Trustee of the union, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, praised the executive for documenting its achievements through a stewardship presentation, describing the initiative as a commendable tradition that promotes accountability and preserves institutional memory.
The Chairman of the NUJ Online Chapel, Abdulkadir Dangambo, also urged journalists to strengthen unity and cooperation to further enhance the profession and contribute to Nigeria’s peace, progress and development.
Representatives of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim and Abdullateef Sadiq, congratulated the chapel on its one-year stewardship presentation and encouraged members to sustain professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The event was attended by representatives of the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, the Director-General, Media and Publicity to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Professor Kurfi, members of the NUJ Kano State Council, executives of the Online Chapel, Government House Correspondents’ Chapel, Information Chapel, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), former NUJ chairmen, veteran journalists and other media stakeholders.
The celebration also featured the induction of two new members into the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel and provided an opportunity for participants to review the administration’s achievements while reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the chapel and the journalism profession.
