Massive Turnout Greets Garo at Assembly Screening

A large and diverse gathering of political stakeholders converged on the Kano State House of Assembly this week for the screening of deputy governorship nominee, Murtala Sule Garo, in what observers described as an unprecedented show of unity and support within the state’s political landscape.

The screening, conducted by the Assembly as part of constitutional requirements, drew a wide coalition of party leaders, former office holders, and grassroots representatives, underscoring the significance of the nomination by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Prominent figures at the event included federal lawmakers such as Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi, Kawu Sumaila, and Alhassan Ado Doguwa, alongside former and serving state officials.

Their presence, along with that of former commissioners, advisers, and local government leaders from across the 44 local government areas, reflected broad-based backing for the nominee.

Members of the party’s elders forum, including former Speakers such as Abdulaziz Garba Gafasa and Ya’u Yanshana, also attended, signalling continuity between the party’s established leadership and its emerging direction.

Many attendees reportedly travelled from Abuja and other parts of the country to witness the exercise, highlighting the political weight attached to the nomination following the vacancy created in March 2026.

The gathering also featured former local government chairmen, caucus leaders, party executives, and members of the women’s wing, as well as supporters and observers, pointing to extensive grassroots mobilisation in favour of the nominee.

Analysts note that the scale and diversity of participation at the screening suggest a consolidation of political interests within the state, positioning Garo as a consensus figure capable of bridging divides within the party structure.

The event is being regarded by political observers as one of the largest turnouts for a screening exercise in the state since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, reflecting both the high stakes surrounding the deputy governorship position and the level of alignment within the ruling political establishment.
