The Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman, Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Senator Barau Jibrin, has stressed the need
for synergy and collaboration among stakeholders to achieve meaningful reform in the 1999 Constitution.

He stated  this on Friday, during the opening ceremony of the retreat for the Senate Committee on Review of the Constitution, held at Bristol Palace Hotel Kano.

Senator Jibrin then called on
participants to consider desirable amendments with utmost care and consideration, keeping in mind the far-reaching implications for generations to come

According to him, the Key Objectives of the Retreat was to Review and amend the 1999 Constitution to meet the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians,Collaborate_ with House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review, executive arm of government, State Governors, State Assemblies, judiciary, and civil society organisations with a view to Build consensus on contentious issues through constructive dialogue and collective problem-solving.

As we embark on this critical journey, let us remember the timeless values that make nations great: freedom, equality, and justice.

These enduring ideals should guide us through this arduous task.

As we consider desirable amendments to our Constitution, I implore that we do so with the utmost care and consideration.

Our decisions today will have far-reaching implications for generations to come, and we must ensure that they are in the best interests of all Nigerians.

Furthermore, to achieve meaningful reform, we must synergize with our esteemed colleagues in the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review and collaborate with critical stakeholders, including the executive arm of government, State Governors, State Assemblies, the judiciary, and civil society organisations,

So has to build consensus on contentious issues. Our collective success hinges on our ability to work together seamlessly, sharing ideas and expertise to develop a report to be submitted to the Senate for further legislative actions.

This retreat presents a unique opportunity for constructive good-faith dialogue and collective problem-solving.

He however emphasized the importance of remaining committed to justice, equity, and progress in forging a more robust and inclusive constitutional framework for Nigeria.

Speaking at the occasion,the
Chairman Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria Adebo Ogundoyin who is the speaker Oyo state house of assembly ,then called for the prompt transmission of the National Assembly’s resolutions on the proposed amendments to the State Houses of Assembly.

On behalf of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, I would like to express our profound gratitude to the Senate Committee on Constitution Review and the National Assembly for organizing this timely and critical session on the ongoing Constitution Review exercise.

“We deeply appreciate the recognition and involvement of the State Houses of Assembly in this process”.

He stated that ” Your collaboration speaks volumes of the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that the Constitution reflects the true needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

Therefore,”Your  sincerity and dedication to driving meaningful constitutional amendments are evident, and we stand ready to work alongside you to achieve these goals.

At this juncture, we reiterate our earlier call for the prompt transmission of the National Assembly’s resolutions on the proposed amendments to the State Houses of Assembly.
Timely submission is essential to allow us at the sub-national level to effectively fulfill our responsibilities.
We recall the challenges posed by electioneering activities during the 2023 general elections, which nearly hampered the last constitutional alteration.
We are determined to avoid a recurrence, and an early start will be key to ensuring a smooth and efficient process.

Also speaking at the occasion,the Kano state governor Abba Kabir Yusuf represented by the commissioner for internal Affairs Retired Major General Mohammad Idris said the Retreat was timely.

He then urged members of the committee to deliberate on issues that will move the country forward and to ensure prompt submission of report to the Senate for necessary Action .
